Does semi-permanant hair dye completely fade?

It is supposed to fade away but sometimes not all of it does it leaves some color and it will start at the roots.Also there are some hair supplies you can use that take the color out of your hair,its called color zap,but it does take a little while, like a couple of weeks or months, hope this helped :)
