Best way to grow grass in a dead zone on my lawn?

We use to have a beautiful lawn, but for some reason, the grass died, and eventually disappeared from a patch in our lawn. Its just hard dry dirt. I really would like to have my lawn grow beautifully. Are there seeds or fertilizers that I can use to make it grow quickly and evenly?
