22 month old son wakes up screaming.?
Sounds like he could be having night terrors. Unfortunately they are really scary but the child really has no recollection of it. My son is 2 and has been having them off and on since he was about a year old. They are not aware of what is really going on. If you try to interfere with it too much and try to snap them out of it, it can add to the night terror. My son does the same thing. Wakes up screaming bloody murder or saying "NO NO NO".... I come running and when I see him he is flailing around or laying there kicking. He doesn't want to be touched, and picking him up makes it that much worse. I usually will just sit there by his bed, try to pat him a little and "shush" him a bit. Tell him "mommy is here" and wait for it to calm down enough that I can comfort him. It's scary, and it seems like they are terrified, but from my research they truly do not remember it and don't know that it's going on really. If this is the case then he will grow out of it eventually. Mason's are less frequent now and aren't nearly as scary anymore. From the sounds of it he is getting enough sleep, because usually they say lack of sleep can contribute to night terrors. I'm not sure if this is the case with your little guy, but it is a possibility. The night terrors tend to start anytime after they are a year old. It's sad but I know this too shall pass. Hang in there... things will even out.
